A pretty scenic walk along the coastline from Wemyss Bay via Inverkip and the coastal path to Gourock. This is a pretty interesting walk with great views to the Cowal Peninsula and Dunoon.

Pretty Easy

This is an easy, but long walk on good tarmac pavements and paths. There is one climb here. The climb out of Wemyss Bay is short and a bit steep. The walk from Inverkip to Gourock is flat all the way on good paths, pavements and a promenade. Good shoes and plenty of water is required for this walk.

Train from Glasgow/Paisley to Wemyss Bay 2 times an hour.

The walk starts from the Wemyss Bay railway station, the finest railway station in the whole of the British Isles. Take the road (make that... pavement) to the left, towards Inverkip. Cross under the railway bridge to the foot of the climb and you will be met by this building...




The climb up the road/pavement is not particularly hard.. or interesting. The same can be said for the walk over this small hill to the descent down to Inverkip and the war memorial at the seafront.



Walk past the marina to the first road to the left, signposted Inverkip Marina. Take this road past the marina and over a bridge to the townhouses. A the end of this road, take the road down to the left again and past the harbour. At the end of this road, take the first road to the left again. After 100 yards/meters, take the signposted path between two houses to the seafront. Take this path to the right again. You are now on the coastal path to Lunderston Bay.



This path is a blend of gravel, earth and tarmac. It is a good path along the coastline with some great views along the path. It is the best part of this walk.



The path passed the public toilets at Lunderston Bay, and it continues on for 300 yards/meters along the shoreline before it meets up with the Inverkip - Gourock road. The pavements are good here past the very scenic Cloch Lighthouse.



The good pavement continues along the coastline and the road past McInroy's Point and the ferry terminal. There are some good ferry traffic here and it is well worth watching. The walker now gets the choice of moving onto a good promenade the last mile / 2 km to the Gourock Outdoor Pool.



This walk on the promenade is really lovely. The final part to the railway station gives you two choices. You can continue the walk on the seafront or you can walk through the main street in Gourock. In any case, you end up at the Gourock railway station, where this walk ends.
