Gryffe Valley, Port Glasgow

A nice walk through Gryffe Valley on the backroads and then over Port Glasgow Golf Course down to Port Glasgow. The views here are excellent. The short, narrow Blackholm Road is one of the finest small roads/hidden gems in the Clyde, much loved by horse riders and the locals. This road is alone a reason to do this walk.

Pretty Hard

A pretty hard scenic and lovely walk with three medium hard climbs and a steep descent at the end. This walk is very exposed to the sun. Bring plenty of water. Good shoes are also recommended.



McGill's Bus 7/7A from Paisley Town Hall to Linwood 4 - 6 times an hour. Then bus X7 to Kilmacolm.
McGill's Bus X7 from Glasgow/Braehead/Linwood 1 -2 times an hour.

Step off the bus at Kilmacolm village square next to the Coop Shop. Walk the Lochwinnoch Road over the Paisley - Port Glasgow cycle/walking path and over a bridge crossing Rover Gryffe, out of the village and past the Kilmacolm War Memorial (to the left) to the end of the pavement at a crossroad where four roads are meeting up. Take the road and the road verge to the right up a small climb to the next crossroad where you at the big white house, take the road to the right again, Blackholm Road. The views back to Kilmacolm are good from here.




This road, after the first short, steep climb is flat along the plains here. The road crosses River Gryffe again where the River Gryffe Way path goes down to Kilmacolm again. The road starts to climb past a farm before the final steep part of this road up to the Blackholm Road - Auchentiber Road. Take this road to the left. After the left bend, the road become flat again before a the Devol Road signpost at a gravel road. See this picture...



This gravel road climbs up past a windmill to the top of the hill. The road is now passing Port Glasgow Golf Course. The views from here in all directions are brilliant.


The road now descends towards Port Glasgow and River Clyde. First down a steep descent on this gravel road to the clubhouse at Port Glasgow Golf Course and then on the now tarmac surface Devol Road down to Dubbs Road. Continue straight ahead down (on the pavement) Barr's Brae on a very steep descent down to a zig zag bend in the road and a crossroad. Take the road to the left down to the car park at Port Glasgow train station and cross the railway line on the good foot bridge to the platform where this walk ends.

Train to Paisley/Glasgow 4 times an hour.
